CS 1.6 Steam Server Stats

Estimated real players across CS 1.6 servers in the Steam server list, checked every 10 minutes, with fake servers and bots filtered out

Every 10 minutes I take the whole Steam server list for CS 1.6 and ask each server itself who is playing on it. The number below is my estimate of real players on those servers - based on direct server checks, not just what the server browser shows. Old builds and the 25th anniversary build, VAC and non-VAC servers, Steam and non-Steam clients - everything on the Steam list goes in.

The difference is big. Well over 90% of the addresses in the Steam list are fake servers that claim a full house and have nobody on them. Together they claim millions of players. They are caught and not counted. The chart shows both numbers - what servers claim and what is real.

What the Numbers Mean

Every block of the page, top to bottom

Big number
Real players on CS 1.6 servers from the Steam list at the last check, and on how many servers. Only servers that answered and whose player list checks out are counted. Bots are taken off, fake servers are left out completely.
How it adds up
The column next to the big number reads top to bottom. First, the total player count reported through A2S_INFO by servers in the Steam list, excluding bots. Minus the players on fake servers and farms. Minus the players on servers that hide their player list, because I can't check them. What is left is the big number.
Updates
The servers are checked every 10 minutes, and a full round takes about four. The badges show when the last check finished and when the next one is due. When new numbers come in, the page changes them by itself - you don't need to reload it.
What is counted
The row of marks under the card: every server in the Steam list, all builds on protocol 48, Steam and non-Steam clients, VAC and non-VAC servers. Servers that are not in the Steam list are not counted.
Tiles
Peak today (in your time) and the record, Steam's own count of people with CS 1.6 open (see why it is higher), the busiest map, the country with the most players by server location, and bots.
What is in the Steam server list
Every address in the list, split three ways: fake farms (red), servers with real players (green) and the rest - empty servers, servers that didn't answer and single fakes. The red part is usually well over 90%.
Players over time
The history, from the last 24 hours to everything since I started counting. The bright line is real players, the dashed one is what servers claim, the red hatching between them shows player counts excluded by the filtering system, including fake and hidden servers. Hover the chart for the exact numbers at any moment.
When CS 1.6 is played
Every hour of the week, brighter means more people. The times are in your own time zone, and the square for right now is outlined. Under it: the busiest and the quietest hour and how much the weekend adds.
Modes, maps, countries
Where the real players are right now. The mode is worked out from the map and the server name: zm_ maps mean Zombie, jail_ - JailBreak, and so on. The country is where the server stands, not where the players are from. Click any mode, map or country to open its own page.
Servers
Every server with real players, busiest first. Search by name or IP, filter by mode and country, or switch the list to fake servers and fake farms to see who was caught.

How Fake Servers and Fake Players Are Caught

Nine checks, run on every server every 10 minutes

The Steam list for CS 1.6 holds around 340 thousand addresses, and about 95% of them are fake farm servers. Together the fakes claim millions of players, while the real players on all servers in the list are around five thousand, depending on the time of day. The live numbers are in the block above.

There is a catch that hides real servers too. Steam returns at most 10,000 servers per request, cuts the rest off without saying so, and the farms fill those 10,000 rows. A plain query never shows a large part of the real servers. Since 23 October 2026 I ask again and again, each time leaving out the farm IPs already found, until no new real servers turn up. That brought about a thousand real servers with roughly 1,600 players into the count that Steam simply wasn't showing - about a third of everyone. The charts mark that moment with a dashed yellow line: the jump there is a change in counting, not in online.

Fake Server Farms

Most fakes come from farms. A farm is one IP address with hundreds or thousands of game servers on different ports. About 400 such IPs make up almost the whole fake part of the list. On the biggest ones I check a sample of ports: if half the sample is fake, the rest of that IP is counted as farm without asking every port.

  • Borrowed names. A farm takes the names of well-known live servers and runs them on dozens of IPs at once. One popular Dust2 server name shows up in more than a hundred copies. Some farms don't even try: This is a dummy CS 1.6 server! runs on about two thousand ports.
  • Always full. 21-32 of 32, sometimes 255/255. Often the whole farm runs one map.
  • Players hidden or made up. Simple farms don't send a player list at all. Smarter ones copy real names from live servers, so the same nickname "plays" on ten servers at the same minute. The smartest even make the time on server grow like a real player's - what gives them away is hundreds of almost full servers on one address.

Why do this? The in-game browser and server monitors sort by players, and a farm of hundreds of "full" servers fills the top of the list. Some of them redirect whoever joins to another server. It looks like selling "online" and advertising. That's my guess, not something I checked.

How to tell a fake from the player's side, and how to keep them out of your own server list, is in a separate guide: How to Spot and Block Fake Servers in CS 1.6.

The Checks

A fake can lie about the count, but it has a hard time keeping the lie consistent. One check is enough to mark a server fake:

Check What gives a fake away Why a real server passes
Farm 30+ servers on one IP, and most of them are fake, hidden or half full and more. Or 8+ servers on one IP that are almost all full and hide their players. Or 10+ servers on one IP where half the names are copies of each other or random strings like g1dLhYJdo8j0YFF8 A real host can run dozens of servers on one IP, but they have their own names and are not all full at the same moment
Copied names Three or more players on the list "play" on three or more servers at the same minute, and they are 40%+ of the list One person can't play on three servers at once. The original server is safe: a player who has been on it for 10+ minutes with the time growing right is not counted as a copy there
Time on server Most players' time on server didn't grow by the time between two checks: 40 minutes became 5, or 3 hours Real time grows by exactly the time between checks. Right after a map change the check is skipped, because everyone reconnects
Slots More than 32 slots, zero slots, or more than 32 players CS 1.6 can't hold more than 32. A full server with an admin in a reserved slot showing 32/31 is fine
Redirect The name advertises another server's IP: "NEW IP -> 1.2.3.4:27015" Printing its own address is fine. A listing that points somewhere else is a signpost, not a server
New name every day The address takes a completely different name three or more times in a week Real servers rename now and then. Small edits and a clock in the name don't count
Empty fields No name, no map or no game folder The engine always sends all three
Joined together Five or more players with the same time on server and zero frags, and they are most of the list Real people join one by one and play. The first 3 minutes of a map and bots don't count
List vs count The server says 6+ players, the list has less than a third of that A normal server sends everyone who is on it

What Each Status Means

  • Real players - the server answered and the list holds up. Its players are counted, minus bots.
  • Fake - caught by at least one check. Nothing from it is counted, and its page says which check caught it.
  • Fake farm - one of the servers of a farm. Farm servers keep changing ports, so they get no history and no charts.
  • Hidden list - the server answers but doesn't say who is playing. Some plugins do this. Its players are shown as unverified, outside the main number - can't check them, won't count them.
  • Not answering - the server is in the Steam list but didn't answer. Down, restarting or blocking queries.

No check is perfect, and a fake that copies a real server's behaviour well can slip through for a while. The checks are tuned on live data and will keep changing, but the rule stays the same: never punish an honest server. If your server is marked fake by mistake, see Your Server.

Server, Map, Mode and Country Pages

Every server, map, game mode and country has its own history

Click a server in the list and you get its page: real players now, the average and the peak over 7 and 30 days, the all-time record, how often it was up, its chart and its own "when people play" grid, the maps it runs and similar servers in the same country. From there, Live info opens it in CS 1.6 Server Info with the player list, cvars and plugins, and Play joins it through Steam.

Maps work the same way. The map list ranks every map by real players over 7 days, 30 days or a year, with the trend against the period before. A map page shows how many people play it right now, its history and the servers running it at this moment.

Game modes and countries have pages too. The mode list explains what Zombie, JailBreak, Surf or KZ actually are and how many people play each of them, and the country list shows where the servers stand. Each page has its chart, its busiest hours, its best servers and the maps played there right now.

Before you pick a server to play on, look at its page. An average of 15 players over the week says more than a "32/32" in the browser.

Why Steam's Player Count Is Different

Two different things are being counted

Steam counts everyone who has CS 1.6 running from Steam. This page counts people I can see on servers from the Steam list who pass the checks. Right now, Steam's number is about three times as high.

  • Steam counts, I don't: people in the main menu, on LAN, playing with bots, on servers that are not in the Steam list and on servers that hide their player list.
  • I count, Steam doesn't: players on non-Steam clients. Many servers let them in, and in some countries they are most of the players.

So the two numbers are not one inside the other. Steam's tile says how many people have the game open in Steam. The big number estimates how many Steam and non-Steam players are active on servers from the Steam list right now. For comparison, CS2 Player Count tracks Steam's live Counter-Strike 2 numbers every 5 minutes, with historical charts, player peaks and hourly activity.

Your Server on This Page

Adding it, fixing it, and what to show your players

  • It is on Steam's list. Then it's already here - every server in the master list is picked up within 10 minutes. Find it in the server list by name or IP.
  • It is not on Steam's list. Then it is not on this page, because the page covers the Steam list only. CS 1.6 Server Info shows whether Steam lists it and the usual reasons why not.
  • It is marked fake and shouldn't be. Write on the forum with the IP. Its page shows which check caught it, which usually tells what's wrong - a plugin that changes the player list, for example.
  • It hides its player list. Then its players can't be counted as real. Let the server answer player queries. If it passes the other checks, it moves to "Real players" by the next check.

A server page with a week of honest numbers is a good thing to link from your own site or forum - "15 people on average every day" is something a new player believes.

Data Coverage and Limitations

What this page can and can't tell

  • Only the Steam list. Servers that advertise only on other master lists or on monitoring sites are not seen here.
  • Every 10 minutes. Someone who joins and leaves between two checks is not counted. Over a day that evens out, for a single moment it doesn't.
  • Country of the server, not the player. A server in Germany full of players from Poland counts as Germany.
  • Modes are guessed from map names and the server name. A classic server that runs one zombie map now and then may switch mode for that hour.
  • No player names. They are used inside the checks and thrown away. This page only ever shows numbers.
  • Some honest servers look hidden. A real server that hides its player list with a plugin ends up in "unverified", not in the big number.
  • History starts on 21 October 2026. The 7-day and 30-day averages fill in over the first weeks, and the "All" range grows from there.

CS 1.6 Server Stats FAQ

Short answers

A glowing FAQ sign on a futuristic holographic panel surrounded by floating question marks
How many people play CS 1.6 right now?

The big number at the top of this page, updated every 10 minutes. It estimates real player counts after filtering out fake servers and bots.

Why is it lower than the server browser shows?

Because most of what the browser shows is fake: well over 90% of the servers in the Steam list claim to be full and have nobody, and some others are bots. Compare the two lines on the chart - the hatched gap between them is that.

Why does Steam show more players?

Steam counts everyone with CS 1.6 running: in the menu, on LAN, on servers outside the Steam list and on servers that hide their players. I count only people I see on servers and can check. Details in Why Steam Shows Another Number.

What is a fake server farm?

Hundreds of fake servers on one IP address, with names copied from real servers, always full, with player lists that are hidden or made up. Farms take up about 95% of the CS 1.6 server list. More in Fake Server Farms.

When is the best time to find a full server?

Look at "When CS 1.6 is played". It's in your time zone, and the brightest squares are the hours with the most people. For a single server or map, its own page has the same grid.

What is the most played CS 1.6 map?

See the map list, ranked by real players over 7 days, 30 days or a year. "Maps right now" on this page shows the current moment.

How do you know a server is fake?

Six checks: hundreds of full servers on one IP, the same names on many servers at once, time on server that doesn't add up between two checks, more players than slots, everyone joining in the same second, and a list that doesn't match the count. Details in How Fakes Are Caught.

My server is marked fake. What now?

Open its page - it says which check caught it. If it's a mistake, post the IP on the forum.

Are non-Steam players counted?

Yes. The count comes from the servers, not from Steam accounts, so anyone on a server counts. Servers that are only on non-Steam master lists are the exception - see Limits.

Do you store who plays where?

No. Player names are used for the fake checks and thrown away. Only numbers are kept.

Can I see who is on a server right now?

Yes, in CS 1.6 Server Info - every server page has a "Live info" button that opens it there.
